Quick introduction

The functionality of your smartphone or tablet depends on the applications or apps it has installed. Your device will have come with several apps already installed, but you can install additional apps to give your device more functionality.

On most Android device, apps are installed using the Google Play Store. Here you will find millions of apps; many of these are free.

What do you need to install apps?

  1. You will need an Android smartphone, tablet or computer with access to the internet.
  2. The Google Play Store (this should have been already installed on your device when you got it).
  3. Enough storage space on your device for any new apps.

The easiest way to make more storage space on your device is to uninstall any apps you no longer use. Check out the guide to uninstalling Android apps.

Using the guide

The following pages look at installing apps for Android smartphones and tablets using the Google Play Store. It is broken down into chapters to let you dip in and out. You can skip any chapters that do not interest you.

You will find links to previous and next chapters at the bottom of each page. There is also a ‘Guide Index’ below the page heading. If you tap on this you will see all the chapters in the guide.

You can read through the guidance online or download the printable versions of the pages you need to view at your leisure.
